Rugby World Cup 2023 Match Predictions and Analysis
Thursday 28th Sept,
Uruguay v Namibia, I would expect Uruguay to win this by about 15 points. Neither team are great, but the Uruguay team are bigger and have better skills.
Friday 29th Sept,
Japan v Samoa, This game will be closer and both sides can win here. Samoa will start as favourites, but a 6 point start to Japan should be enough.
Saturday 30th Sept,
New Zealand v Italy, N.Z. simply have to win this and win well, or they will end up like Australia as a fail. I think they will and go on to win by about 25 points. The Italians have most definitely improved over the last couple of years under former All Black, Kieran Crowley, and are most definitely worthy of respect. Especially at a time when a misjudged tackle can quickly escalate into a 15 against 14 scenario that would have the potential to make things very uncomfortable indeed. In 2022 the Italians upset Wales in the Six Nations and Australia in the November internationals (a result that almost certainly cost Dave Rennie his job), and earlier this year their Six Nations results reflected a team very much on the rise – they lost 29-24 to France, 34-20 to Ireland, 31-14 to England, 26-14 to Scotland and 29-17 to Wales.
They had the fastest ball available in the Six Nations – that’s better than Ireland – and that’s quick. They know their game, and they’re playing it well. The Azzurri have opened their World Cup with victories over Namibia (52-8) and Uruguay (38-17) and though neither were exactly flattering results, this side requires utmost attention.
Argentina v Chile, The big pack from South America will dominate here and should win by 50 points. There number 10 kicks very well also.
Sunday 1st October,
Fiji v Georgia, Fiji will want this more, firstly to stay in front of Australia in that group, against a big pack from Georgia. Fiji by 15 points.
Scotland v Romania, Scotland all the way here by 50 points.
Monday 2nd October,
Australia v Portugal, Australia who have been terrible under Eddie Jones, who talked them up big time, will win over an improving Portugal. Jones was hoping to play his B team here, but after losses to Wales and Fiji he will be forced to play his best side. Not a lot of difference between the A’s and the B’s really. Both poor. Plus a coach out of his depth and should never been appointed. Bad decisions made by the Aussie Rugby board and all of them should follow Eddie out the door. Rugby League and AFL and even Aussie Soccer will love this, and Rugby Union has been damaged in Australia for a long time to come. Australia by 20 points.
Hamish McLennan, the chairman of Rugby Australia, told disgruntled Wallabies supporters ahead of the Wales game: “Don’t watch.”
It is about the only sensible thing that McLennan has said during his sorry tenure. Australian fans were heading for the exit long before the end of the game in Lyon.
Former captain George Gregan called it the lowest point in Australian rugby history.
South Africa v Tonga, The huge South African side will be upset over their loss to Ireland and Tonga will pay the price. S.A. by 30 points.
Last week I picked South Africa to beat Ireland in a close game. Ireland won.
And I picked Georgia to beat Portugal. This game finished in a draw. Otherwise all predictions correct.
