Prepare for an exhilarating showdown as the mighty Black Ferns take on Canada in an epic encounter scheduled to unfold in Ottawa, the formidable Black Ferns will face off against Canada in the Women’s Rugby Pacific Four Series. Among the anticipated changes in the lineup, the spotlight falls on Lucy Jenkins, a rising star poised to make her debut for the Black Ferns.
Jenkins’ journey to the black jersey began with an awe-inspiring encounter at an All Blacks’ training session in Christchurch back in 2013. Reflecting on the experience, she recalls meeting the legendary Ma’a Nonu and how it left an indelible mark on her rugby path. Although initially playing in the forwards, an opportunity arose as a midfielder, leading to a fortuitous meeting with Nonu. Jenkins even won tickets to watch the All Blacks’ game against France, further fueling her passion for the sport.
For Jenkins, hailing from the small Canterbury town of Kirwee with a population of around 1000, a Black Ferns debut would be the culmination of an extraordinary rise. Her journey began at the age of 16 when she made her debut for Canterbury in the Farah Palmer Cup in 2017. Since then, Jenkins has consistently showcased her talent, earning recognition as the Super Rugby Aupiki MVP for her outstanding performances with the title-winning Matatū side.
Casey Caldwell, a renowned Black Ferns forward who once worked on the Jenkins family farm, played a pivotal role as an influential role model. With three Rugby World Cups under her belt and 38 tests played over 12 years, Caldwell inspired Jenkins to strive for greatness.
As the Black Ferns gear up for their clash against Canada, fresh faces join the lineup. Experienced loosehead prop Phillipa Love earns her first start, while Kelsey Teneti returns for her second test in the fifteens format. Jenkins, the impressive Matatū loose forward, is also poised to make her debut off the bench.
In the front row, Love teams up with hooker Luka Connor and tighthead prop Amy Rule, forming the core of the scrum. The starting 15 sees the only changes from last week’s dominant victory over the Wallaroos in Brisbane.
