Super Rugby Aupiki

Rugby in general

The new age of women’s rugby starts on Saturday when the second edition of Super Rugby Aupiki begins in Levin.

Four semi-professional New Zealand teams – the Blues, Chiefs Manawa, Hurricanes Poua and Matatū which is the only South Island team– will get a full, uninterrupted season to showcase the game.

Last year’s inaugural competition was heavily disrupted by Covid-19 and shortened to three rounds in 10 days.

There is cautious optimism that Aupiki can capitalise on the Black Ferns’ momentous Rugby World Cup win and maintain the game’s profile after it skyrocketed in last year’s global tournament in New Zealand. New Zealand Rugby is hoping to expand Aupiki from as soon as next year, with more matches and teams from overseas, but it’s still only five rounds and finishes in March.

Super Rugby Aupiki, round one on Saturday

– Hurricanes Poua v Chiefs Manawa, 2:05pm at Levin Domain, Levin

– Matatū v Blues, 4:45pm at Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin

This is exciting rugby and is great viewing. If you get the opportunity to watch women’s rugby played at it’s best, then tune in to this. ENJOY!!!
